Potato Straw Mulch Experiment

This season I decided to try something new to me. Planting all my potatoes on St. Patrick’s day. As my location last frosts are up to mid may I thought I’d try mulching the beds with straw for protection. My reason being primarily frost protection but also keeping the soil from drying out and meaning I shouldn’t need to earth up the potatoes as they grow. Well so far it seems to be a success, there have been multiple frosts and the potatoes were as I expected protected . The plants, after a little furtle underneath, came through a week ago but only now have reached the top of the straw and are peeking out and in nice condition. I’m optimistic about this method and will update as the season goes on.
